i am proud to be featured on this is my brave – even the name of this organization is inspiring to me. in honor of their message about bravery and resilience, i wrote a piece called “the morning my brave was born.” i share about how my father’s suicide placed me on an immediate and life-long path of bravery and perseverance. “wise beyond my years, strong beyond my self, and courageous beyond my own awareness, beyond my own understanding. there, on that most awful and unimaginable of mornings, my brave was born.”
about this is my brave:
the mission of this is my brave is to end the stigma surrounding mental illness by sharing personal stories of individuals overcoming mental illness through poetry, essay and original music, live on stage, through stories submitted and published to their blog, and via their youtube channel. through the sharing of stories and experiences of those in recovery, they provide a sense of community and hope; and encourage others to share their stories. they believe that each time one of us shares our story, there’s another crack helping to break down the stigma of mental illness. right now, it’s time to be brave and bring mental health issues into the spotlight because they’ve been in the dark too long.
